question about zinc
Question:
Here are a couple more URLs with information about zinc: http://www.gnc.com/wellness/natpharm/Supp/Zinc.htm http://www.cc.nih.gov/ccc/supplements/zinc.html Steve – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – ok, so zinc can be toxic if too much is taken, right? wasn’t 50 mg a fairly high amount? anyway, i went to walmart and got some zinc and it’s 100mg per tablet. is this safe?? thx for any insight. peep my online music column- http://home.talkcity.com/universityway/collegegazette/ then click on "MUSIC TALK" http://community.webtv.net/sandman89/MRREDHOT (my homepage)

I have read that 100 grams of zinc or more tends to slow down the immune response. Instead, try using a more potent form of zinc. Optizinc is a better type of zinc which has been shown to stay in your body significantly longer that conventional forms and best of all the absorption rate is higher. I have used zinc for a while and I was impressed with the results. Good luck
Response:
What I don’t understand on that one site is how 17-50 mg can be at all harmful. I mean, 17 mg… that’s 2 mg above the amount you’re supposed to get. Are you supposed to monitor it that closely? Even if you do have a zinc deficiency, taking 15 mg is gonna put you over the top. I’m a vegetarian so I probably don’t get enough zinc, but I’m sure that I get more than 2 mg. Is taking a 15 mg supplement gonna hurt me?
Response:
my question is…why would they produce a tablet of 100mg of zinc, if it’s potentially toxic?? maybe i should cut the pills in half, huh? peep my online music column- http://home.talkcity.com/universityway/collegegazette/ then click on "MUSIC TALK" http://community.webtv.net/sandman89/MRREDHOT (my homepage)

I don’t know for certain the medically-recommended maximum dosage but the 100 mg tablets made me REALLY nauseous (and I’ve got a lead-lined stomach) . . . for me, at least, 50 mg is the right dosage.

Before I started Zinc supplements I searched around the net for information on recommended dosages and recall several sites stating amounts above 100mg per day could be toxic. I personally take between 30-45mg per day. Before replying to your post I did a quick search to try and find a URL to back-up my statements, and found this one: http://www.state.fl.us/gvl/lifequest/zinc.htm I presume this is the official Florida state website, and it states: "Supplementation at 100 mg/day has been toxic. And 17 – 50 mg/day of supplemental zinc can block the healthy rise of HDL cholesterol that normally accompanies exercise. Toxic symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, lethargy and fatigue. Taking 150 mg/day can affect cholesterol metabolism and may accelerate the development of atherosclerosis." I also recall several sites that mentioned that supplementing zinc at higher levels (sorry, can’t remember what level specifically) can lead to Copper deficiency and therefore copper supplements should also be taken after a month of "high" zinc supplementation. If no-one else responds with more definitive information, I suggest you use google or another search engine to look for information about zinc because there are many sites out there with information on dosages, toxicity levels etc, etc. Steve – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – ok, so zinc can be toxic if too much is taken, right? wasn’t 50 mg a fairly high amount? anyway, i went to walmart and got some zinc and it’s 100mg per tablet. is this safe?? thx for any insight. peep my online music column- http://home.talkcity.com/universityway/collegegazette/ then click on "MUSIC TALK" http://community.webtv.net/sandman89/MRREDHOT (my homepage)

cool–are you in canada by any chance?
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Today it’s "Natural Factors" – last bottle was "Jamieson", I think. Honestly, I buy whatever’s the best deal at the time I need it. Sprucedale, What brand of Zinc are you taking? If it were me, I’d start with 30 mg in the morning . . if that didn’t have the desired effect (giving it maybe 2 weeks to kick in), I’d add 30 mg at night, too. they only one gnc had when i went in was zinc gluconate 30 mg. is 30mg in the morning and 30 at night to much. i know everyone keeps saying 50mg is the max but is 10mg extra harmful?

"Zinc can also be taken as a nutritional supplement, in one of many forms. Zinc citrate, zinc acetate, or zinc picolinate may be the best absorbed, although zinc sulfate is less expensive. When you purchase a supplement, you should be aware of the difference between the milligrams of actual zinc the product contains (so-called elemental zinc) and the total milligrams of the zinc product. All figures given in this article refer to the amount of actual zinc to take." http://www.tnp.com/encyclopedia/substance/138/801/ — Kasper E-mail: rbb at rocketmail.com
